This article discusses the definitions or Keywords I have seen used to describe the 8th House of Astrology throughout my time as an astrologer. Recently, I've been evaluating my 8th house transits and want to share some insights that may help you understand the 8th house and what it can represent in your natal chart or when transits move through it. When I began working with astrology in 2016, astrologers often referred to it as the house of Mystery, Secrets and Taboo things. Today, when I search the 8th house, I find definitions like this: “equal-opportunity house, sex, death and rebirth.” The last two concepts overlap with 12th-house themes. More frequently, I have even seen the 8th house referred to as the house of transformation—any cheat sheets I’ve made for clients have always referred to it as the house of Personal Growth and Transformation. First, let's discuss the OG definition: “Mystery, Secrets and Taboo things.” This definition in popular astrology, especially in the early 2000s (and earlier, but I was just a kid in the 90s), directed people to think about the 8th house as where sexual insights lie. “Curious about someone's fetish or secret life? Look at their 8th house!” This is a slight over-exaggeration of the 8th house themes. At its core, this house directs people to think about topics that could be unknown. Unclear or make the native more mysterious to other people. When looking at a natal chart with this definition of the 8th house, yes, we can gain insights into what people may like to keep private or what is likely to be influencing them subconsciously - hence, “mystery and secrets.” Diving into this interpretation can help the native self-reflect. This style of interpretation can mislead outsiders trying to interpret a chart by overexaggerating themes or relating them only to sexuality and dramatic secrets.
The benefit of self-reflection leads us to the modern-day popular definition of the 8th house- Transformation! Through reflecting on these more profound ideas of what subconscious or private thoughts influence the native, the individual can reach a point where their perspective transforms and achieve a milestone in their personal growth! The issue I have seen with defining the 8th house in this way is that most people need assistance to recognize opportunities for personal growth or need to be encouraged to point out how things are changing and transforming - it is human nature to be a little pessimistic and self-deprecating when it comes to change. I have found that the assistance of an Astrologer or therapist helps people align with the 8th house’s definition of personal growth and transformation. Through my eight years of working with clients, I have come up with some new keywords that help my clients identify and accept what they are going through when the 8th house is activated. These new keywords are: 1. Discomfort 2. Chaos 3. Surrender In Chris Brennan's Hellenistic Astrology course, he examines the 8th house as a house of other people's money, relating to debt or money that is inherited - yet another perspective of the 8th house that I saw less discussed in popular modern astrology. Knowing this, I began to think about other 8th house themes as relating to “the other,” such as the people's baggage or trauma that we have become attached to through our relationships or other people's opinions and values - it can be argued that we keep secrets due to fear of judgment from other people's values and points of view. The original key terms of mystery, secrets, and taboo also relate to the unknown reality and fear of other people's opinions or the influence of others. This is what led me to my new keywords. When the 8th house is activated, it can bring a sense of discomfort. It creeps in slowly, and you can often dismiss these feelings and not recognize that some of your reactions at the time could be coming from feeling uncomfortable or dealing with energies and influences that do not actually belong to you but are coming from the influence of others. Discomfort can manifest differently for people; it may be general restlessness, anxiety, being asked to take accountability, being asked to forgive, or needing to step out of one's comfort zone at the request of others. When looking ahead at the transits, you can pinpoint a heightened period of discomfort when your 8th house is activated strongly. When your 8th house is activated, evaluate if your immediate reactions belong to you or are a result of past experiences and outside influences. By doing these things, you will be working with the energy of the 8th house to acknowledge your boundaries and influences and open your mind to how you can transcend those issues and end up having an experience that supports your Personal Growth. A Life Coach once told me that discomfort is a signal of growth, which is why I find it appropriate for the 8th house’s definition. In your chart, the sign and planets in the 8th house can reveal common triggers or a sense of otherness. For example, an 8th house ruled by Libra may mean your relationships or material world can be strongly influenced by others. A big lesson for you is to stick to your gut and find your own understanding of your relationships and your aesthetic. Being willing to not make decisions out of people pleasing others as well. If Mars were in your 8th house, you might be influenced by aggressive people in your past, causing you to doubt yourself or act out of a trauma response to your past experiences with aggression. When influenced by the energy of others, there is a lack of control and chaos. You may feel more chaotic because your mind is asking you to be concerned about things that are not coming from you. The best thing to do when an 8th house activation shows up this way is to check in with yourself, remind yourself of your values and needs, and try to point out where the external influence is coming in. For example, my most recent 8th house activation had me freaking out because a situation occurred, and my recurring thought was, “My mom would have yelled at me if I did that to her.” Because I was aware of the 8th house’s activation at the time, I took a step back - I was looking at my real-time situation through the lens of my mother, not even who she is today but the version of herself 18 years ago. What good was that doing me? I had to draw my understanding of the situation back to the people who were actually involved and what I could do that was in my control (in this case, apologize, show support, and let go of this reaction because of past influence). When things that are out of your control occur, the final thing to do is surrender. In my personal example above, I had to put the situation's results into the universe's hands and not assume an outcome. I also had to surrender those old feelings about my mom's reactions and ask the universe to help me not react that way in the future. Surrender and Chaos are terms that can be associated with the 12th house. While reflecting on the definitions of the 8th house and noticing the multiple overlaps - I couldn't help but think that modern/popular astrologers simplified the definition of the 8th house’s influence to Mystery, Secrets, and Taboo things so they would have fewer arguments and doubt from audiences. The truth is the 8th house and 12th house work together in harmony. They are 120 degrees apart from eachother, creating a trine, a harmonious aspect. The experiences you have when your 8th house is activated support your ultimate growth when the same planet activates the 12th house. In your natal chart, the 8th and 12th house placements can help you understand a great story of your personal growth journey and your connection to spiritual concepts and your higher power. To review, the 8th house of an astrology chart can represent various things, including mystery, secrets, taboo, personal growth, transformation, discomfort, chaos, and surrender. Each individual's 8th house can have unique triggers and lessons that they need to work with to achieve personal growth. While the 8th house is often associated with uncomfortable and challenging experiences, embracing and working with its energy can lead to profound transformation and growth. With the help of an astrologer or therapist, individuals can learn to navigate the complex energies of the 8th house, recognize their boundaries, and gain insights into their subconscious and private thoughts, creating opportunities for self-reflection and personal growth.

Last week was a whirlwind - I barely had a moment to catch my breath. In the midst of it all, I stole a glance at how the Solar eclipse was affecting my natal chart. To my surprise, I found myself grappling with a genuine fear that something bad could happen to me.
I thought this for 2 reasons. First, the solar eclipse activated my 9th house (through my sun) of travel - I would be travelling home from a brief weekend trip on this day. Second, the Moon would also be passing through my 12th house (through my rising) right before the eclipse. This led me to think that something dangerous could occur that caused a major change in my life while I was travelling. Thankfully, on my 5 hours bus ride to my destination, I was able to reflect on this astrology more closely and calm myself down. There are layers to astrology - the Popular Layer - things shared in basic tick toks that describe some of the main themes of astrology focused on things happening TO you. Then there is a second layer - The Consciousness Layer - the less discussed details of astrology that reveal how the exact transits actually influence your consciousness. This layer is where astrology for personal growth lies. When I had more time, I delved deeper into the consciousness layer of transit analysis. The activation of my 9th house hinted at a potential for intellectual expansion and shifts in my mindset. This sparked my curiosity to explore new subjects that could significantly shape my worldview and astrological perspective. Additionally, I received positive news about my career, which I interpreted as a manifestation of the 9th house's expansion and the 12th house's theme of closure. There are so many more ways that I have seen the themes of these houses show up over the course of the eclipse but would be too much to share. Ultimately, I share this experience to underscore a crucial point-astrology is not always the dramatic spectacle that influencers and news articles often portray. In my view, its true worth lies in its capacity to serve as a mirror for self-reflection and mindfulness, helping us understand our current state and how it aligns with our aspirations and needs. Sometimes, you need a hand to help you understand astrology through the consciousness layer and lens of mindfulness - that is what I am here for! To be honest with you, every time I see astrologers sharing warnings about eclipse season, I roll my eyes and think to myself, “Ugh, it’s not that big of a deal!”. After seeing a few early posts flagging the Libra Eclipse, I had to stop myself and think - am I downplaying Eclipse Season? This article is a result of my reflection, where I review what eclipses are and how my perspective on eclipses has changed over my near decade of practicing astrology. Astrologers warn about manifesting around the eclipses and caution you to expect breakdowns and dramatic changes. Through these warnings, eclipse season has become a focal point for needing answers and “astrological anxiety*.” This is where my personal perspective has changed. I went from eclipse anxiety to acceptance after having worked with my personal astrology regularly. If you want to learn why and how to stop fearing eclipse season, read on. The Facts Did you know that we experience an eclipse every month? The New Moon is a solar eclipse by definition. So what dictates an “Eclipse Season”? When the Solar eclipse or New moon occurs in the location (think zodiac sign) of the current Lunar Nodes, the moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. The North Node is the point where the moon crosses the ecliptic going in the north or ascending direction, and the South Node is the point where it crosses going in the south or descending direction. When a New Moon hits them, welcome to eclipse Seaon! Lunar eclipses can only occur on the Full Moon and are less common because they need to be located in alignment with the sun and the Earth's shadow. However, they may take place in signs that are side by side throughout the year or in early and late degrees. The image below shows the three options of locations for Lunar Eclipses, where it says Penumbra and Umbra. The Thoughts
Astrologers Who Say it is best not to manifest during eclipse season are not wrong. The truth is that eclipse season points to where in your life perspectives are about to change—as all astrologers can agree, eclipses are ALWAYS associated with beginnings and endings. With manifesting, especially if you use more magical tools and rituals, you run the risk of calling in energy that you may not want after the eclipse. However, there are other perspectives on manifesting, and this is where I have had my biggest issues over the years. I dabbled in ritual and symbology on the new and full moons. Young Sarah was definitely guilty of manifesting during eclipse season. As my spirituality and mindfulness practice grew, I became the type of person who sees “manifestation” in everyday small actions and prayers or intentions. This made eclipse season anxious for me because what was I supposed to do? Live my life differently for six months? Stop my positive thinking? No. In my opinion, the act of “not manifesting around the eclipses” should restricted to rituals and spells. Keep going with the actions that move your manifestations to actualization. The Eclipses symbolize the general vibrations starting to shift, and you are about to feel the results massively due to the results of your previous work. If you are new to manifesting, mindfulness, and personal growth work, Eclipse Season is an interesting place to start! Ideally, you will understand what areas in your life you have been working on, and Eclipse Season often offers fruit from the work you have done or a gift of change that re-directs you. If you have been practicing mindfulness or working with your favourite spiritual tools regularly, there is less to fear because you will already be aware of or aligned with what is developing from the eclipses. You might be thinking, “How do I work toward this level of mindfulness? It is different for everyone. The tool that worked for me was astrology, and I worked with my personal astrology regularly. For now, I can leave you an essential tip. So, is it the eclipse and unknown events you fear or change in general? When you sit with this question and recognize where you are holding fear, do your best to accept it. It is expected to be afraid of change! Humans are conditioned to do what they can to keep themselves safe, and in this day and age, it translates to maintaining a status quo in day-to-day life. If we break eclipse season down, it means something in your day-to-day life is shifting, is that really so scary? Addressing your fear or resistance to growth is half the battle (trust me). Bottom Line: Eclipses are not scary when you are ready to pivot. Final Note: I encourage everyone to understand their personal definition of manifestation and to ask questions when reading warnings from astrologers or spiritual influencers about what type of manifestation they are speaking to. Personal Example: This eclipse season will hit a combination of life areas that speak to my financial growth and karma, personal transformation, material items, values and secrets. Were these houses on my radar? Absolutely. What does an astrologer not think about finances and personal growth. However, the main transits (Sun, Main Moon Phases, and inner planets) have not been activating these houses over the psixst 6 months. At the beginning of my astrology journey, this would have scared me - I would assume that I was going to experience a change in my financial situation that would turn my plans around. Now I understand that the steps I have taken over the past six months have helped me work towards a new financial truth/standing that I have been hoping for some time but was called in 12 and 6 months ago. So, I am actually eagerly awaiting what changes could unfold here, I personally think it will mark a milestone of me feeling clear with my professional and creative plans thanks to some personal growth and karma I have acknowledged if I happen to also win the lottery, that would be nice too. Working with your personal astrology regularly helps you identify what you are afraid of and when to pivot your point of view, helping you stay aligned with the energy of your goals. Sarah talks about her recent absence from Pajama Astrology due to their 12th house being activated, which requires rest and self-reflection. We then discuss the full moon in Virgo, which can make us feel overwhelmed or critical of ourselves, and suggest checking where Virgo falls in our natal charts to reflect on areas where we want to do more or be of service. Sarah also discusses the close conjunction of Mars and Venus in Aquarius and the battle between action and harmony. She describes the influence of an in conjunct between Aquarius and Virgo and the exact conjunction of the Sun and Mercury with Saturn in Pisces, which can activate or highlight things for those going through their Saturn return.
